RP-SMA Coaxial Cable Connectors for WiFi Antennas

SMA connectors are sub-miniature RF connectors - part of the class of sub-miniature class of connectors.  SMA is a low loss coaxial RF connector and can be employed for frequencies up to 18GHz in a multitude of applications with good VSWR performance. They are very common in RF systems and have a threaded coupling interface that has a hexagonal shape, allowing it to be tightened with a spanner. SMA connector can be used for different types of coaxial cables including semi-rigid and flexible coaxial cables. This connector type is most commonly used to integrate antenna with RF systems with the help of a coaxial cable assembly. For example, a normal user can extend the coverage area of a transmitter by connecting it with a high gain antenna using a simple RF connector like SMA or RP-SMA depending upon the interface standard. SMA connector is also used as an adapter variant allowing its interface with other connector types allowing extensive inter-compatibility. This connector type meets the quality and performance requirements of the military as well as commercial systems.

Reverse-polarity SMA connectors (RP-SMA or RSMA) are modification of the SMA connector with reverse gender and interface as compared to a normal SMA connector. RP-SMA connectors are specifically used in wireless routing equipment to comply with FCC regulations by curtailing any use of non-standard high gain antennas.  Normally the connector on the WiFi equipment is RP-SMA Female and the antenna typically has RP-SMA Male, which is connected using an RP-SMA cable assembly such as a RP SMA extension cable, which is assembled from coaxial cable.

Compatible Coaxial Cables: RG-178, RG-196, RG-174, RG-188, RG-316, RG-58, RG- 141, RG-142 and RG-223. The electrical performance mainly depends on the characteristics of the attached cable like geometrical dimensions, dielectric loading, conductor metal etc. The frequency limits are defined by the weakest component attached to a coaxial line.
